Mutinous Monday...

Just a few more weeks and the Minions will be back!  Until then, here is a little sumpin' sumpin' from the Mistress:

All of the stamps used here are/were from The Angel Company.  I cut up a large collage stamp that had a vintage chick on it with a totally f'd up face... the border and the sentiment was pretty cool, so viola!  I even did a little heat embossing on this baby.

I paper-pieced the chair fabric for a little POP o' color... regal purple... mmmmmmm... this makes me think of True Blood's former King of Mississippi, Russell Edgington for some reason.

(image borrowed from Google Images)
Though Russell was not a looker (helloooooo Eric... I miss you), he definitely had that royal air about him.  Not to mention his style of furnishings:

(image borrowed from Google Images)
Anyway... back to the grind... I need to work on my class samples, but I'm probably just going to veg in front of the tv.  Gotta work at the Evil Job tomorrow... dammit.

Question of the day:  Why can't someone just pay me to HDH all day?  (sigh)

2011 Mutinous Monday #001

That's right folks... it's the first Mutinous Monday from the Macabre Minions!  The Minions need a little R&R and have declared mutiny until 2012, so no challenge this week... but I still wanted to give you a little sumpin' sumpin' to satiate your HDH appetite :)

I even posted on my "normal" blog last night if you want more mainstream :)  Yes... I've been busy.  Anyway, back to a little wickedness...

First up, the last couple of cards from my Halloween card class back in September:

You can't tell, but there is some DELIGHTFULLY sinful, black-velvet crocheted trim from May Arts on the tag... yummy.  And of course, more of that awesome Midnight Dreary line of paper from Moxxie:  Tomb it May Concern & Dead on Arrival.  I rolled a paper rose and finished it off with a dew drop center... LOVE it.

Quite elegant, no?  The top half of this 12x12 paper has a pinkish hue and blended together with the bottom half's greenish hue.  The salmon pink really creates a truly non-traditional Halloween card, but it works!

And here's a favorite of the class:

It would have been 100x better if I would've had my Tim Holtz raven die at the time instead, but this bird worked out ok.  And there's the infamous MS Grass punch... what did I ever do without it?

Moxxie's Feelin' Vine paper... LOVE!  I created the fence with the Scor-Pal and a MS Iron Gate edge punch... turned out pretty awesome me thinks.... simple and detailed at the same time.

That's it for today, but the Minions and I will still be posting random bits now and then... they may be fortuitous, frivolous, fanciful or foul, but you'll want to check back often :)  You just never know when I will be in a random-prize-winner-from-the-comments kind of mood for the next couple of months... hmmm...

**One more thing... we are now gladly taking sponsors for the 2012 HDH Macabre Monday challenge calendar!  Just send a note to The Masterful Mistress via email (link located in the sidebar).

CHA Chicago 2011...

There is an extremely long post over on my "normal" blog about my trip to CHA if you want to check it out HERE

7.26.2011

ATTENTION PAST PRIZE WINNERS & MASTERS OF THE MACABRE:

(image "borrowed" from Google Images)

Hey all!  I apologize for being MIA for so long, but between family stuff, classes, my "real" job & CHA, I haven't had a chance to do anything.  So, if any of you that were to receive a prize and/or Master of the Macabre goodie pack and haven't received it, will you PLEASE email me at barbi007@kc.rr.com ?  In the email, please list your name, email address, mailing address & which HDH challenge or MM month you won.  I misplaced my list that I had started, and I know a couple of you are about to string me up >:)

(image "borrowed" from Google Images)

As soon as work slows down, I am hoping to get caught up.  Also, be looking for a little blog candy in the near future as well!

I want to give a HUGE shout-out to the Macabre Minions for doing an absolutely fabulous job with their weekly inspiration pieces, and for keeping up with the challenges and announcements.  Thank you SO much, ladies... you are awesome :)

Just a little note...

For those of you new to Haunted Design House, I'd like to let you know about my "normal" blog:
Most of my creepiness is here at HDH, but if you need a shot of nice & normal, you can head over that way :)  In fact, today I posted some lovely mythical creature cards... they might be up your alley... in a not-so-creepy way ;)

A big THANKS and Alas, Poor Yorick... ala Barb

Thanks so much to everyone for their wonderful birthday wishes!  And even though I commented on the Minions blogs, I want to thank them here, too... you guys are awesome!  Not just because of the fantabulousness that has been retrieved from my mailbox as of late (which IS pretty effing awesome by the way), but for all the inspiration you guys give me and to all of our readers here at HDH!

So here is my warm-fuzzy moment:
You are the dank to my dungeon, the ooze to my swamp, and the screams to my banshees :)
Love ya' ghouls!

And now, back to our regularly scheduled post:

After seeing what the Macabre Minions created for this week's challenge, I don't know if I should even post my puny little card... wasn't Creepy Glowbugg's mask effing awesome?! And what about Lynx's skully goodness?  I'd like to put in my request for my very own glow-in-the-dark eyeball please :) Thanks.

Well. Here it is. My no-layer card! Yep... that's right. Only the kraft card base & ink, baby:

Stamps: skulls (Artful Illusions), sentiment (Smeared Ink), splotches (something from JoAnn's... cling mount)
Other: Copic markers

Still a couple more days to play along with this week's Macabre Monday Challenge #HDH080!! $20 voucher to Creepy Glowbugg's Etsy store is up for grabs!!!

Blood-thirsty Thursday, HDH078 - My Beloved Monster and other blogsite updates...

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've cleaned up the sidebar a bit and created some handy pages that can be accessed by the tabs under the blog header:
  • Halloween/Goth stamp companies:  this tab has been there for awhile now.  And if you know of some that need to be added, please email me (see sidebar for link).
  • HDH badges:  here you can find badges for Gruesome Twosomes, Master of the Macabre, as well as one plain ol' "I love Macabre Mondays".  Grab 'em if you need 'em.
  • Creepy Cool blogs:  I really need to update this list!  Again, if you know of some AWESOME Halloween blogs, let me know!
  • Our Sponsors:  this is a new one!  The sponsors kept getting pushed down the way, so I felt they needed a page all to themselves!  Thanks for helping out with some of the prizes!  If you would like to sponsor an upcoming challenge, please contact me :)
  • Dt's, stores & other cool stuff:  these are all of the other badges and links for Design Teams I'm on, guest DT spots, challenge blog links, stores I like and/or work for, etc.

I was rushing around last night, trying to button up some DT things & blog stuff, and had a couple of spare minutes to throw this card together!  Yeay!  I ACTUALLY GOT TO PLAY ALONG WITH A CHALLENGE ON MY OWN BLOG!  Oh, sorry... I guess I was screaming :)
Here is my little monstie.  Isn't he cute?  I know he's from Stampotique, but I don't know his name as a buddy of mine sent me a stamped image quite a while ago!  The sentiments are both retired from TAC, and the uber-awesome batty fence is a MS border punch.
I've actually had this cutie colored up for a couple of months now.  Yeah.  I know.  How bad does THAT suck?  It took me longer to cut him out than to color him :)  I think he could be zombie-ish... but not as zombie-ish as Creepy G's card from yesterday... effing fantastic!
I must say that I love my Macabre Minions.  They have totally taken over so many of the duties here while I'm working... thanks guys!  Without you there wouldn't be an HDH challenge :)

2.01.2011

Help the technologically challenged...

Yes, that would be me.  Thanks for asking.  :)   I'm in need of some free & EASY digital video editing software.  I've been shooting a couple of tutorials with our digital camcorder, but they are waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long.  In fact, they would be just about right if I could just change the speed to fast-forward the whole time :)  It's not like I'm talking throughout the thing... although I would also need to add some text to the video to explain schtuff.

I just downloaded the Windows MovieMaker, but evidently my video card is total sheeee-ite (according to the little pop up window) and so the program won't run.  You would think that since I'm married to a compu-nerd that I would have some stellar system... evidently not.  Wienie.  Sooooooo... any ideas?

Welcoming the Winter Solstice and a little folklore...

Just thought I'd throw out a few little factoids and folklore today... just for fun...

Today at 5:38pm CST marks the Winter Solstice and the official start of Winter.  Which means that today is the shortest day of the year... well, in the Northern Hemisphere anyway.  Wikipedia has more info than you'll want to know about it.

{photo found HERE}
The Winter Solstice is a time for rest... I am SO into that :)
Let's just say that Google is my friend.

{photo & info found HERE}
The Winter Solstice marks the battle between The Holly King & The Oak King... with The Holly King of course winning while The Oak King withdraws & rests until the next battle... where upon the table is turned.

HERE are some interesting tidbits on the transformation of Santa Claus from folklore.

11.08.2010

Ok, this isn't creepy or Halloweenie, or anything... but....

I just HAD to share about the class I'm teaching on November 30th at The Scrapbook Page in Shawnee, Kansas :)  Please pop over to my other blog for additional photos and info... thanks!

Best of...

Tim posted an article that lists the
10 Best Haunted House Attractions
... maybe one of these is near you?  :)  And if you've been to any of these, let us know if it they are worth visiting!

10.06.2010

Just a little sumpin' to tide you over...

Ok my little pretties, until I get my Delicious Doodles card made up tonight, please hop on over to my "normal" blog for a couple delightfully eerie-elegant projects :)

Halloween Events in Florida...

Ok.  I am totally jealous of those who live in Florida... well, at least for the month of October :)  The Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is having a ton of events, my favorite being held on October 16th:
A meet & greet with a couple of the True Blood cast members!  The main focus for me would be Joe Manganiellio who plays "Alcide"... yum!

SCCC will also be having a pumpkin carving contest, costume contests, AND... are you ready for this... a meet & greet with Linda Blair!  Yep, the horror flick queen herself.  Check out dates & more events below (click on photo to enlarge):

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is hosting a prize giveaway on Haunted Design House!  Though it's not Halloweenie, these little babies will come in handy... SCCC is providing three car charger USB drives!
Pretty sweet, right?  So, wanna know how you can possibly get your mitts on one of these?  All you have to do is become an HDH follower and leave your link below... and I will randomly draw three winners!  It would be awesome if you would spread the word.  And the Macabre Minions are eligible to enter, too... I don't want you to miss a chance at some goodies :)
**please note that this giveaway cannot be mailed outside of the USA or to PO boxes... sorry!

You will have until Wednesday, October 6th at 6pm central time to enter.  You must check back after that time to see if you are the winner.  If the chosen winners do not contact me within two days after the announcement, I'll draw again.

In keeping with recent FTC rule changes, I am to disclose that I was contacted directly by Seminole Casino Coconut Creek who asked for my participation in promoting these events.  I am doing this without benefit to me, without payment or goods... unless Mike can get me an autographed photo from Joe Manganiellio :)

HDH055 - Elegantly Evil

Well, kids... this didn't turn out NEARLY elegant or evil enough, but I'm posting it anyway :)  I've been busy planning & designing samples for some upcoming classes I'll be teaching at The Scrapbook Page in Shawnee, Kansas!  Yep, if you are in the Kansas City area, be sure to sign up for my October 11th Eerie Elegant card class & October 19th Halloween Waterfall Mini-Album class.  The Scrapbook Page's newsletter should be coming out soon so you can get more details... and I'll be posting a couple of pics here in the next week or so :)

Anyway, back to today's bit o' Halloweenieness :)  Super simple and no frills.

After heat embossing the image & sentiment, I sponged white ink around them.  A little Stickles adds just the right bit o' bling.

What do you think?

8.13.2010

Note to all...

... so sorry I haven't been commenting and everything lately.  My reader is soooooo full, I will never get caught up, so I'm gonna just have to clear it out and start over to avoid being overwhelmed.

(Image "stolen" from Google Images)
So, please don't think I haven't been visiting... I HAVE... it's just been on down low :)  I hope to be back on track soon!!

7.27.2010

A couple of creepy crawlies for you today...

Joy.  I finished my HDH049 Macabre Monday card last night... and NOT without difficulty, I might add.  I will suggest to you that if you want to cover Grunge Paper with patterned paper, do it PRIOR to die-cutting it :)  Yes, I thought it would be easy to just glue it on after... notsomuch.

The plan was to Glimmer Mist the GB so that the grey wouldn't show on the edges... but the mist would probably cause issues with the patterned paper, so THAT'S why I tried it.  I had heated the GB after misting because I am too impatient to wait for it to dry on it's own... it changed shape and shrunk in one direction.  Yeah... totally eff'd up... JUST so you know.  :)  So I just ripped the paper off, sprayed & inked the back and used it anyway... paperless.  Worked out ok, me thinks.

Stamps:  skull (Artful Illusions), web (Inkadinkado)
Paper:  GrungePaper (Tim Holtz), black & premium white cardstocks (TAC)
Other:  glittery spiders (party supply store), Scor-Bug, birdcage die (Tim Holtz), Glimmer Mist, ribbon (HL)
Copics:  0, BV0000, BV20, BV23

I do LOVE the dimension you can give the cage... I should have used GrungeBoard, maybe... it perhaps would hold the shape more, I don't know.

AND, to balance out my dark creepiness, Macabre Mistress Oz has offered up this bit o' cuteness for your inspiration:

Adorable, right?  The spidey stamp is from Stamp It Crazy, the web is Inkadinkado, and she colored the spider with Copics.  I'm glad you were up for the challenge, Oz!  You are the best :)

7.23.2010

And now...

.introduce you to The Sisterhood of the Sinister...
Haunted Design House's very own
Macabre Minions!
{trumpets sounding: doot doot doot doooooot}
wait a sec...
...
...

{maybe it should be shrieking screams instead?}
':)

At any rate, here they are!

Lynx
{Sultana of the Sinister & Macabre Mistress}
I'm also known as Blackdragon because I ALWAYS wear black and adore dragons.  I love darker art, but not the gorey stuff.  I have a warped sense of humour, and love to have inky fingers.  I am known to have an artistic flair and create detailed scenic pieces that tell a story.

I am one busy mum of three hailing from the UK.  When I've got a free moment between the kids & oldies, I am busy creating work for the five other design teams of which I am part and I am hoping to open an Etsy shop very soon!  I was very proud when Barb made me one of the two Macabre Mistresses, along with the wonderful Oz.

The Oz
{Sovereign Monarch of Mayhem & Macabre Mistress}
My name is Linda but I have answered to many things over my years on this planet. The most important to me being Mom and Darling. After several failed attempts, I found my life partner Robert in 1999 and sadly lost him to a brain tumor in 2006. Before he left though, he instilled in me a deep deep craving for life and all of it's goodness that just hasn't gone away. Even though I am now myself fighting cancer, I laugh, cheer, smile, hug and love every moment of my life. This is it folks and this is the "Good Stuff" don't waste it.

I have crafted all of my life and plan on having glue and my MS score pad on my tombstone. Right now it is difficult for me to sit up and create but that just means I am planning.... oh boy if you could see what I am going be making soon!!

I was thrilled to death to find Barb's little dark side blog because it opened up the opportunity to create from the heart and mind in any direction I could take it. I was loving the challenges all over blogland but truthfully some of them were getting so awfully stale. Being a Macabre Mistress has allowed me to shake loose my wings, show a little horn and sprinkle a little dried newt into my Chai all with a touch of guilty pleasure.

Now Barb has honored me with a "Sally Field" award. OMG, you like me... you really do like me! and right at the only (hopefully) time I am not able to play.  But I am getting better, shrinking those damn tumors, and even caught myself admiring a 6-pack of abs the other day. You know that is one of the most important signs of recovery!!!  So even though this bio doesn't list all my past accomplishments, design teams, featured artists, awards or publishing dates, I hope it does express to you my desire to be part of this marvelous group and foremost my NEED and desire to return to creating and play along side! Thank you Barb for your vote of confidence and to my sister Minions..... I SHALL RETURN!

Gloria Steiger aka "Creepy Glowbugg"
{Cadaverous Concoctor of Chaos}
Born September 16, 1970 in Newport Beach, CA. That makes me a Virgo, and if you are one, or know one, I really don't need to say anymore.

My grandparents were a doctor and a nurse in my grandfather's private practice in a small town in Texas. They moonlighted for 30 plus years as magicians, and their wedding anniversary was on Halloween, so "it" has been in my blood since conception (it skipped a generation though, cause my parents are not cool at all).

I am currently on two other design teams, Hambo and The Burtonesque Dolls. I have managed to 'creep-out' or 'gross-out' the relatively mainstream images from Hambo and I am fitting in quite nicely with the Dolls and their Tim Burton inspired challenges.

I love Copics, Jim Henson is my personal saviour, and nothing beats Led Zeppelin, except the Doors.

I have been a fan of HDH for quite a while now, and I feel a kindred spirit in Barb and the Minions. It is quite an honor to be grouped with such a talented bunch of ladies who share the same twisted, black and orange dreams as I do.  Huzzah!

Donna
{Creepy Cricut Cween}
Hi, I'm Donna, and I'm so honored to be one of the Macabre Minions here at Haunted Design House. I've always done some sort of crafting, but began making cards after receiving a Cricut Expression in May 2008. I love doing shaped cards using Cricut Design Studio and have more recently begun stamping and exploring other creative techniques.
I've been married since dinosaurs roamed the Earth (almost 35 years, YIKES!) and we're proud parents of 2 furbabies, Goliath and Jezebel.  It's quite a treat being retired and being able to craft the day away.  My participation in the awesome Macabre Monday challenges has surprised a few of my followers, but those who REALLY know me know I'm a Halloween and Horror freak (with a special spot in my heart for the supernatural and occult).  Don't let that smile fool you!  I can be EVIL!  Mwaa!

Susan
{Devious Digital Demon-ess}
I'm writing this entirely of my own free will and Barb has NOT threatened to unleash her flying monkeys. All is perfectly lovely here at HDH and the new design team is NOT being chained up in a dank dungeon and forced to inject Eye of Newt into candy corn, not at all, I don't know what could have put that idea into your head.
p.s. If you see my hubby, tell him I love him. NOOOOOOOOOO! No! I'm sorry Mistress Barb, I didn't mean it!
{rest of text is illegible due to copious amount of blood splashed all over the page

And lastly, there's me:
{Masterful Mistress of the Macabre}
I have nothing REMOTELY as witty as what Susan has written... dammit.
I'm a not-so-mild-mannered Architectural Project Manager by day, and Miss Artsy Arts & Crafts by night.  I'm also a demonstrator for The Angel Company (I know... the name REALLY doesn't fit my creepy vibe, does it?!!).  I am married to the MOST un-romantic man EVER, whom I lovingly call Poot :)  We have two K-9 kids, Heidi (yellow lab) & Thor (red shepherd & lab mix) who obviously think we are the pets of the house.

I have always had an affinity for Halloween.  Dressing up that one night every year was (and is) a blast!  For one evening you get to really let loose and pretend to be whatever you want (or truly are!).  Half of my Halloween decor is out all year-round... what's not to love about copper pumpkins, poison bottles & spider candle holders?  I've even got a HUGE cast iron cauldron that is proudly sitting on my front porch... you know, we don't get THAT many salesmen coming by anymore :)

I've had such a good time with this little ol' blog, and hope to make it even more fun with some help from my Macabre Minions :)  They are so talented and I am thrilled that they've agreed to it.  So do you want the low-down on some upcoming awesomeness?

Macabre Mondays will always be here!  Duh.  I know.  BUT, now the Minions will be giving extra eerie inspiration to spurn additional challenge participants!  AND we're getting some fabulous sponsors!!!
... to name a few!  I KNOW!  I'm totally psyched!  Starting late next month, HDH will be celebrating
a year's worth of challenges!
I KNOW!  I can't believe it either.  I want to thank all of you for your wonderful comments, challenge participation, inspiration, AND enabling :)

Fiendishly Fun Fridays will be starting up soon!  Totally random creepy links, bizarre photos, weird factoids, and WTF moments :)  Me thinks you'll enjoy it.

I will start listing upcoming HDH challenges in the sidebar so that you can plan ahead :)  There are soooooo many great challenge sites out in blogland that there is no way we can do them all, so I'm hoping this will help you out :)

So, what do you think?  Am I long winded or what?!  How about some blog candy to celebrate the Macabre Minions?!  Just leave a comment with a couple of key words describing each of five Minions and me... just to make sure you actually read all of this stuff :)  We'll draw a name on Sunday August 1st... wanna know what the prize is?  Too bad!  You won't know until you open it ':)

HDH047 - Freaker's Free-for-All

HDH Macabre Monday Rules:
1. Create a dark and macabre SOMETHING (card, scrap page, altered item, whatever) that follows the specific Macabre Monday challenge given. Cutesy is fine, but creepy is better :)
2. You have until the following Sunday night @ 5pm central time to post your creation and please leave a direct-link back here.
3. If you upload to any online galleries (TACPCC, S&S, PCP, SCS, etc.), please tag the title using HDH047.
4. Weekly giveaways!  Some weeks will be loaded with loot, others not-so-much... but the thrill is in the win, right?!  Some prizes shall be by random drawing, others hand picked... and I'm not telling you ahead of time :)
5. I'll be selecting a weekly Gruesome Twosome (my top two favorite creations) from all the players. At the end of every month these will be compiled and a Master of Macabre will be selected and will receive a little giftie from me... this could be stamp sets, handmade items, papers, halloweenie embellishments... you just never know.

Ok, my little pretties... your challenge this week:
Freaker's Free-for-All

 You are to create a dark, Gothic, or Halloween page, project or card using whatever the hell ya' want!!  That's right, baby... a true free-for-all... no rules... no suggestions... no limits :)  Well, the ONLY suggestion would be that they should be REALLY dark and creepy this week... you know, Halloween is a mere 110 days away!

I think that all of the jack-o entries last week really got me in the mood for Halloween.  You guys are awesome!  And I now have a few wonderful jack-o carving links that have been lovingly bookmarked {smiling}
Wanna know what sucks, though?  I will not be able to get anything done for this week's challenge!  I know.

I SUCK... and not in a good way.

However, I do have a wonderful excuse and it's not even made up!  I am working at my day job all week (good AND bad, all at the same time), AND I will be teaching classes at the house (papercrafting & stamping), AND I have a super fun long weekend starting Friday (fun stamping weekend with some fellow TAC demos... as well as teaching Copic coloring!).  So, as you can see, unless I can pull something outta my... ummm... by some stroke of geniusness get something done Thursday night, you will have to do without me.
{sniffling... chin quivering... }

There WILL be two Simply Betty posts this week, though... only because I had a deadline :)  There will be some great build up to the July 15th release day and hop, so be sure to clicky over there
{pointing to SBS DT list in the sidebar}

Thanks, guys!  I'll make it up to ya'... swear!
Really.
Promise.
I totally mean it.
{conceals horns beneath halo VERY well}

Random poll question:

Since I have been sucking (in a bad way) at posting, and keeping up on schtuff... should I enlist the help of you good (or evil) readers?  I guess it would be KINDA like a design team, but since I don't own some awesome stamp store, compensation would be a whole separate poll question :)

(HDH design team picture stolen from Google images)

See, when I first started this little ol' blog, I thought I would be surfing the net, finding all kinds of random creepy and weird stuff to post... photos, links, whatever.  How much of THAT has gone on here?
Exactly... notsomuch.  Busy busy... which is good in some ways & NOT in others :)

Sooooooooo, what should we do?  I am definitely keeping Macabre Mondays going, but right now I don't know very far in advance as to what the challenge will be.
{to be read as:  drum up something the night before or night of posting :) }
procrastinate much?

I need to bite the bullet and figure stuff out a minimum of a month ahead
(haaaa haa haaaa.... oh, sorry)
IF I do that, maybe we could do a little team thing?  I don't know... what do you think?
I'm just randomly typing crap here, guys :)

What would suck (in a bad way) is that if we get a team going and then no participation in challenges happen except team people... know what I'm sayin'?  So, please please let me know your thoughts...
I really DO appreciate all of you!
you are the skull to my crossbones
the wand to my spells
the nail in my coffin... er, ummm...
... maybe that last one was a bit much?

Kenny K's DT call

Kenny K's Krafty Girlz challenge blog is having a DT call through Saturday, June 26th!  These are some cute digi's, I must say.  And if you go to his greeting card shop, you'll see a bunch of fabulous little goth girls, which I am hoping will be released as digi images in the future {crossing fingers}!

So, this post is my bid for a DT spot :)  We're supposed to choose one of our best creations, colored images are a must, and post it.  What is difficult, is that what I think is my best and what someone else thinks is my best are probably totally different :)   Plus, Copic coloring looks very different from colored pencil rendering, so which do you choose?  So, I'm posting more than one... will that totally disqualify me?  :)
Click on the photos to see them up close and personal!

What do you think... which is your favorite?
